Support Scholarships for Texas Students
The College for All Texans Foundation scholarship initiative is a focused effort to expand opportunities for Texas students who want to pursue a higher education degree or certificate.
Why the College for All Texans Scholarship Fund?
Although the state has invested more than $2.5 billion in state financial aid since 2000, and the state legislature recently increased the allocations for higher education grant programs, large gaps remain-we estimate that only 51% percent of qualifying students will receive a TEXAS Grant and 3 percent of eligible community college students will receive a Texas Educational Opportunity Grant in 2010 and 2011. Raising funds for scholarships will help close the gaps in educational opportunity in Texas.
Why is Higher Education Important?
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has received strong support from educational, business, and political communities for the Closing the Gaps by 2015: The Texas Higher Education Plan because of the many economic, individual and community benefits of increasing the participation and success in higher education. According to the Perryman report, "A Tale of Two States-And One Million Jobs!!" if Texas closes the gaps in higher education it "accelerates economic growth, creates over 1,000,000 new jobs, and offers legitimate opportunities for success to individuals and families from every socioeconomic stratum;" and "most important of all, it will improve the lives and opportunities for millions of Texans." (The Perryman report was a study published in March 2007 and funded by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for the Commission for a College Ready Texas.)
Who benefits from the College for All Texans Scholarship Fund?
Grants and gifts to the Texans Education Fund will support matching scholarships for Texas students. CFAT will be partnering with programs on the local level to expand and enhance local scholarships. We will select programs that will help meet the targets in Closing the Gaps by 2015-such as underrepresented populations in higher education especially Hispanics and African Americans and students pursuing teaching certificates, especially potential teachers of math and science.
